Aion 2 officially launches globally after 17 years.
Nearly two decades after its first installment, Aion 2 has been confirmed for a global release in 2026 via Steam. Developer NCSoft stated that the game will have servers in multiple regions, including North America, South America, Europe, and Japan.
This is an important step in bringing the Aion brand back to the international market, after the first installment achieved great success and maintained a player community for many years.
Aion 2 was released 17 years after the first game.
Controversies following its launch in Asia.
Prior to its global release, Aion 2 launched in South Korea and Taiwan in late 2025. However, the game received much negative feedback, mainly related to its microtransaction system and pay-to-win elements.
Despite being a free-to-play game, Aion 2 included many paid packages and subscriptions, which sparked strong reactions from the community. NCSoft subsequently apologized and pledged to adjust its monetization model, but specific changes have yet to be announced.
A vast world and upgraded gameplay.
Aion 2 is set 200 years after the first game, with a world 36 times larger and developed on Unreal Engine 5. The game continues to utilize the signature flight mechanics, allowing players to move, fight, and explore from the air.
The PvE system includes solo dungeons, 4-person party dungeons, and 8-person raids. The map design focuses on height and open spaces, providing a more multi-dimensional exploration experience compared to the previous version.

Opportunities and challenges in the MMO market
The global launch of Aion 2 comes at a time when the MMO market is facing many challenges. Many major projects have been canceled or failed to meet expectations, while existing games are also experiencing a decline in player numbers.
Nevertheless, with its strong brand foundation and technological advancements, Aion 2 still has a chance to compete if it effectively addresses its business model issues. The game's success or failure will largely depend on how NCSoft balances player experience and revenue.
