Dynasty Warriors Origins: The spectacular return of the legendary hack-and-slash game.
Dynasty Warriors Origins brought me unexpected nostalgic experiences. The last time I played Dynasty Warriors was part 3, decades ago. Yet, when the Battle of Hulao Pass appeared on screen in Origins, I still remembered every detail and felt incredibly excited.
Dynasty Warriors Origins is an action role-playing game (ARPG) set in China during the Three Kingdoms period. The game revolves around the story of the three kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu, and the epic battles between martial arts heroes. You will explore a vast open world, meet historical figures, collect items, and participate in classic battles.
Dynasty Warriors' gameplay is unique and easily recognizable, even for those who have never played it before. Thousands of soldiers will flood the screen, and you, as an 'invincible' warrior, will have to 'sweep' through hordes of enemies to reach your goal. This gameplay is called Musou, or 'crowd-combat'.
The feeling of being 'invincible' when 'taking on' an entire army: Soldiers are usually very weak, like 'mosquitoes biting stainless steel' to you. But every time you unleash a special move, you'll see hundreds of enemies 'flying like broken kites,' a truly exhilarating feeling. Dynasty Warriors Origins has taken this action experience to a whole new level.
The real challenge comes from the generals: The generals and well-known enemies are the real tough test. You'll have to exploit every weakness and relentlessly attack to win. Searching for and eliminating generals amidst a chaotic crowd feels like watching an action movie.
Decent graphics, smooth performance.
While not the most visually stunning game, Dynasty Warriors Origins represents a significant improvement over its predecessors. Koei Tecmo has strived to upgrade the graphics while maintaining stable performance, even when the screen is cluttered with effects and characters.
Instead of allowing players to choose from the familiar 'star cast' of the Three Kingdoms, Dynasty Warriors Origins introduces a completely new character. This character's gameplay will depend on the type of weapon you use.
Each type of weapon has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, spears can eliminate multiple enemies at once, swords are suitable for one-on-one combat… After experimenting with many types, I decided to choose a staff, as it can both control crowds and deal effective single-target damage.
The anonymous 'Wanderer': The game's protagonist is called 'Wanderer'. He is a 'traveler' who gets 'lost' in the world of the Three Kingdoms. Although he doesn't have a particularly striking personality, Wanderer is loved by everyone. He has no dialogue, only expressing his emotions through facial expressions and a 'mysterious' smile.
Character customization is 'limited': You can name the Wanderer, but that's the only customization option. His outfit is also very 'bland' and can't be changed much.
The plot is captivating, and the combat is satisfying.
Although I was initially overwhelmed by the game's massive cast of characters, the storyline gradually became more engaging and made me want to keep exploring. The intense battles are an essential ingredient, adding drama and excitement to the game.
After completing the main campaign, I got to experience a new game mode, new weapons, and a higher difficulty level. Dynasty Warriors Origins has high replay value, and although battles can become repetitive, the feeling of 'sweeping' through enemies is always satisfying and never boring.
If you're a fan of the Dynasty Warriors series or want to try your hand at the 'crowd-combat' genre, Dynasty Warriors Origins is a great choice. While there are some minor limitations in character customization, its engaging gameplay and captivating storyline will surely provide you with hours of top-notch entertainment.
