The streaming community is outraged by Twitch's new rules regarding politics and social issues.
Twitch has just updated its policy on sensitive content on the platform. Previously, Twitch required streamers to label content when discussing 'sensitive politics and social issues'. In other words, streamers were not allowed to share private and sensitive topics while livestreaming.
Twitch explained that this change aims to clarify what content needs to be labeled. They emphasized that streamers don't need to label content when talking about personal experiences. Labels are only necessary when the topic of discussion is central to the stream. The goal is to provide viewers and brands with clearer information about stream content, helping them decide what to watch and where to interact.
The policy was initially introduced after much controversy over racism on the platform, leading to streamer Asmongold being banned for offensive remarks about Palestinians. However, this rule angered LGBTQ+ streamers because their existence was perceived as 'political'. They feared the labeling would affect their revenue, as many advertisers tend to avoid streams with content warning labels.
Twitch has adjusted its rules to address these concerns. Examples of sensitive content such as 'discussing political or social views on gender, race, sexuality, or religion' have been removed. Instead, the warning label only applies to streams that 'focus on discussing topics such as gender, race, sexuality, or religion in a divisive or inflammatory way'.
Nevertheless, this change remains controversial. Many argue that it's merely a change in wording, and the core issue remains the same: the LGBTQ+ community is still targeted. Questions remain about who will decide what content is 'divisive or inflammatory'.
Some streamers argue that Twitch is avoiding the issue. They believe that labeling discussions about minority rights with warnings is unreasonable. Instead of focusing on content censorship, Twitch should address racism more thoroughly.
In short, Twitch's efforts to censor political content are causing considerable controversy. Defining LGBTQ+ rights as political has created numerous problems for the platform. It seems this is not the end of the story.
