The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 has been revealed, featuring 16 CPU cores and two 3D V-Cache chips.
Essentially two 9800X3D processors in a single CPU, the 9950X3D2 is the ultimate embodiment of Zen 5 architecture and 3D V-Cache technology.
More than a year after its initial rumors, the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 has officially launched and will be available for pre-order in less than a month. With 16 cores and two 64MB 3D V-Cache chips, this CPU is truly a beast, but AMD is positioning it for developers and creators, not for casual gamers.
In fact, AMD was very secretive about the launch of this new chip, even unexpectedly announcing the news via email instead of a press conference. The email made no mention of gaming performance, suggesting it wouldn't compete with the 9850X3D or 9950X3D.
However, in a video announcing the new chip, Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD's Computing and Graphics division, described the new CPU as still delivering 'the incredible gaming performance you'd expect from a Ryzen 9 X3D processor.'
Huynh went on to say that the 9950X3D2 would really shine 'in tasks requiring extremely fast data access speeds.' That means 'large-scale software development, compiling game engines […] 3D rendering and complex content creation processes' and, yes, 'AI modeling.'
For these tasks, AMD says the 9950X3D2 will be 5-10% faster than the 9950X3D, which doesn't seem like a significant improvement. That's not surprising, given the company hinted at the CPU's prospects last year.
This ultimately explains why AMD has been quite secretive about this launch. The 9950X3D CPU is already very expensive, with a suggested retail price of $699. Considering the additional cost of adding another 3D V-Cache chip, integrating a second chip into the 9950X3D2 means the CPU's price could reach at least $799, or even more. With only a 5-10% performance increase, this CPU will primarily be a showpiece.
Although the price of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 has not been officially announced, its release date has been set for April 22nd.
