Steam Officially Offers a Solution to Regional Price Discrepancies

Recently, Valve began updating the tool developers use to set game prices on Steam, aiming to address one of the most criticized issues.

Valve's latest move on the "region pricing" issue on Steam.

For a long time, games on the Steam platform have had different prices across countries and regions. This is basically nothing unusual, but the problem is: In some markets, players will pay more for the same game than the average. Even when converted to US dollars, the price is significantly higher.

Meanwhile, Valve's price suggestion tool for developers hadn't been updated for a long time. This led many to believe that the suggested prices were no longer accurate to the economic realities of each country. To address this issue, Valve updated the developer pricing toolkit. Simply put, these are 'smart suggestions' that help developers set more appropriate game prices in each region.

These new tools are based on various factors, such as the cost of living or entertainment expenses in each location. This allows developers to use this information to determine more reasonable prices, rather than relying solely on a simple calculation as before.

Specifically, the new pricing toolkit introduces three distinct conversion methods for establishing regional pricing for games on Steam:

  • Conversion based on exchange rate:  Uses the base currency exchange rate at the time displayed.
  • Conversion based on purchasing power:  Based on publicly available data on average purchasing power in the local area, varying by country or region.
  • Multivariate conversion:  Uses multiple factors, from purchasing power and entertainment costs to currency exchange rates. Essentially, it's very similar to the old toolkit.

The power still lies in the hands of game developers and publishers.

It's important to note that  Valve  isn't forcing developers to follow the suggestions from the new toolset, and they still have full discretion over how much their game will cost in each country. This change is likely to have a more significant impact on indie games (games developed by smaller studios). This is because smaller game developers often lack the data and experience to determine pricing across multiple countries, so they will benefit greatly from the new suggestion tools.

Conversely, major companies like Sony already have dedicated market analysis teams, so they've already set their own regional pricing. Therefore, Valve's new tool may not bring many changes to AAA blockbusters. Even if many developers start using the new tool, players may have to wait a while before seeing any noticeable price changes. This is because price adjustments don't happen immediately and depend on the decisions of each publisher.

While not a permanent solution, this move shows that Valve has begun to take the issue of price discrepancies between regions more seriously. Whether game prices will become more affordable ultimately depends on how developers utilize these new tools.
