Film adaptations from games – In recent years, cinematic works (including films, animations, television shows, and anime) based on game franchises have achieved considerable success. It could even be said that we are in a 'renaissance' of film adaptations from games .

Because of this, film studios are increasingly looking for game franchises to adapt into movies.

So, what game adaptation projects are currently in development?

tipsplay.net will provide a brief overview and compilation of films, animations, TV shows, and anime based on games that have been announced or are about to be released.

1. Borderlands

August 9, 2024

 

Plans to make a film adaptation of the Borderlands game series were first announced in 2016, with Avi and Ari Arad producing and Aaron Berg writing the screenplay. However, since that announcement, information about the project's progress has been quite limited.

In 2020, Lionsgate once again announced the Borderlands film project , this time directed by Eli Roth and written by Craig Mazin, known for the Chernobyl series (and more recently, The Last of Us ).

2. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

October 10, 2024

 

Netflix is ​​developing an animated series called Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft , set in the universe of the current generation of Tomb Raider games, specifically after the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018.

Lara Croft will be voiced by Hayley Atwell (famous for her role as Agent Carter in the MCU) instead of the game's voice actress, Camilla Luddington. Additionally, Tasha Huo of The Witcher: Blood Origin will write the script and serve as executive producer for the show.

3. Like A Dragon: Yakuza

October 25, 2024 & November 1, 2024

 

Like A Dragon: Yakuza  (also known as  Like A Dragon: Beyond The Game ) is the result of a collaboration between Wild Sheep Content and 1212 Entertainment, with rights from SEGA and released worldwide on Amazon Prime.

The plot of this television series will be based on the story of the  first Yakuza game  (and the remake,  Yakuza Kiwami ).  Like A Dragon: Yakuza  will be set primarily in the Kamurocho nightlife district, following Kiryu and his three childhood friends across two time periods, 1995 and 2005.

According to Masayoshi Yokoyama, head of RGG Studio, this film will not be a 1:1 adaptation and will have certain differences. 

4. Arcane: Season 2

November 2024

 

Season 1 of Arcane concludes with sisters Vi and Jinx taking completely different paths in the upcoming war between Piltover and Zaun.

Part 2, set to be released in November 2024, will be the final chapter of this animated series. Even so, according to co-creator Christian Linke, there are still many stories related to the legend of Arcane to tell.

5. Sonic the Hedgehog 3

December 20, 2024

 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will officially hit theaters on December 20, 2024, continuing the story from the second installment, which was a huge commercial success.

We still don't know much about this third installment, but the after-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has confirmed that Shadow the Hedgehog will be the villain, and recently, Keanu Reeves has been announced as the voice actor for the character.

Attendees at CinemaCon 2024 got to see the first footage of the film, but it hasn't been released to the general public yet.

6. The Last of Us: Season 2

Following a fantastic first season, HBO's The Last of Us will return in 2025 with new episodes based on the second game in the series from Naughty Dog and PlayStation.

Currently, we only know some basic information about season 2, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Manzino as Jesse, and Isabella Merced as Dina.

The show's producers – Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann – have also confirmed that season 2 will have fewer episodes, but season 3 could be 'significantly longer'.

7. Minecraft: The Movie

Minecraft is an upcoming adventure film based on the 2011 video game Minecraft by Mojang Studios. Directed by Jared Hess, written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, the film stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa, along with Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement.

Legendary Pictures, Mojang, and Vertigo Entertainment co-produced the film, which will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Recently, some development images of the film have been leaked, giving us a glimpse of what Jack Black will look like as Steve and the creatures of the Minecraft world.

8. Five Nights at Freddy's 2

After Five Nights at Freddy's became Blumhouse Productions' biggest hit, a sequel was quickly greenlit.

Aside from the expected release date of fall 2025, we still don't have any other information about this film.

9. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2

On 'Mario Day 2024' (March 10th every year), Nintendo brought us the news that a new Super Mario Bros. movie is officially in development and will be released in theaters on April 3rd, 2026.

Not much information about the film has been shared yet, but Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the company is 'thinking about expanding the world of Mario even further and it will have a bright and exciting story!'

The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie was probably the easiest decision for Nintendo, given that it had already been seen by over 168.1 million people worldwide and grossed over $1.349 billion at the global box office.

10. Fallout Season 2

Release date is yet to be determined.

Following the resounding success of its first season (with 16 Emmy nominations), Amazon Prime's Fallout series was quickly greenlit for a second season.

Although we don't know much about season 2, show executives Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner have stated that the development team is working 'as quickly as possible' to bring the show to fans.

11. The Legend of Zelda

Release date is yet to be determined.

The Legend of Zelda has officially been adapted into a live-action film and is being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Avi Arad, President of Arad Productions and former Founder and CEO of Marvel Studios.

The film will be directed by Wes Ball and co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. Nintendo will finance over 50% of the film, and Sony will handle theatrical distribution.

12. The Witcher Season 4

Release date is yet to be determined.

 

Netflix's The Witcher will officially return for its fourth season, but there will be a new Geralt of Rivia as Liam Hemsworth officially replaces Henry Cavill.

Last May, Netflix gave us our first look at Liam Hemsworth in this role.

13. God of War

Release date is yet to be determined.

 

Prime Video has officially announced a live-action God of War series is being developed by Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions. The series will adapt the story of the 2018 God of War and will see Kratos and Atreus journey to the highest point in the nine realms of Norse mythology to scatter the ashes of their deceased wife/mother.

At CES 2024, Sony confirmed that scriptwriting for the series is underway.

14. Horizon

Release date is yet to be determined.

 

Sony has announced that it is developing a Netflix series based on the worlds of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West . The series may be called Horizon 2074 , and the director of Umbrella Academy, Steve Blackman, will direct the project.

At CES 2024, Sony confirmed that scriptwriting for the series is underway.
