Marvel Rivals insists it will not repeat Overwatch's 'mistake'.
Marvel Rivals had a solid launch and continues its successful run. The game reached 10 million players in just one day; the number of players on Steam has consistently remained above 200,000, and this number is expected to increase as more people join. The quality of the game and the continuously updated roster of new characters are key factors in retaining players.
Belonging to the 'team-based shooter' genre, Marvel Rivals inevitably faces comparisons to other franchises, including a popular Blizzard game that once made the genre a hot commodity. However, NetEase has made it clear that despite similarities with other team-based shooters, Marvel Rivals will not copy everything they do.
One of the main differences of this game is that players can freely choose any character from the roster. This means that, if you want, you can assemble a team of offensive, defensive, or any play style you prefer. You won't be limited to a specific role just because your teammates have already chosen your preferred roles.
In an interview with Dot eSports , creative director Guangyun Chen confirmed that the 'role-based matchmaking' concept will not be featured in the game.
"Currently, we are not considering implementing a role-based matchmaking system. The team's goal is to provide diversity in team composition through coordinated skills and unique character designs, allowing players to embody their favorite Marvel superheroes instead of being limited by roles."
Some might think this would harm the game in the long run, but Chen says things are going very well:
'From the data we've observed, things are progressing positively. We want players to have a Marvel experience where they can freely choose the characters they love. [Since the closed beta test], everything has been logical and under control. In the recent competitive mode, there have been many different team compositions created by players, and we will continue to monitor these interesting team compositions and their impact on the game.'
This freedom truly gives Marvel Rivals an advantage over its competitors. Since there's no "role-based matchmaking," you simply wait for enough players to join a match before you can start playing. Of course, the game is still undergoing changes, but these are all natural balance adjustments aimed at improving the experience.
The role-based matchmaking system (role queue) was a controversial feature in Blizzard's Overwatch. Many players believe it was one of the factors that killed this once hugely successful game. It not only made matchmaking longer, but sometimes even ruined the player experience. Many players were forced to play a role they weren't comfortable with to find a match, then played poorly in that role, causing their entire team to suffer endless defeats. It remains to be seen how Marvel Rivals will fare in the long run. But at least, so far, many of the developer's decisions are receiving enthusiastic support from gamers.
