Next-generation Xbox Project Helix revealed: Superior performance, capable of running both Xbox and PC games.

Five years after the launch of the Xbox Series, Microsoft is reportedly preparing for a new generation of consoles. Despite spending $67.9 billion to acquire Activision Blizzard and expand its ambitions in the gaming industry, sales of the Xbox Series X|S fell short of expectations, even lower than the Xbox One, and struggled to compete with the PS5 or Nintendo Switch.

According to Polygon's analysis, disappointing hardware sales have led Microsoft to change its strategy. Many brands previously considered 'Xbox exclusives,' such as Halo, Forza, and Gears of War, are no longer limited to a single platform. Instead, Microsoft is focusing on a day-to-day game release model on its Game Pass service. However, this service is also beginning to reach its growth limits. While Microsoft has significantly improved the number of first-party games, it lacks a sufficiently powerful hardware platform to fully exploit that potential, forcing it to bring many titles to PC and even PS5. Amidst doubts about the future of the Xbox line, Microsoft has officially confirmed the next generation of consoles codenamed Project Helix .

According to Microsoft's new CEO of gaming, Asha Sharma, Project Helix will be capable of running both Xbox and PC games. She stated that the console will target the high-end segment and aim for leading performance. Some sources even suggest its power could surpass the PS6 in the future, although the price will also be higher. Microsoft's announcement of the official codename also shows that the company remains serious about pursuing its console development strategy. Asha Sharma is expected to discuss this project further with partners at the Game Developers Conference. Regarding the release date, according to information from AMD executives and Windows Central, Project Helix is currently planned for release in late 2027. This timeline aligns with the console cycle of approximately 7 years and also coincides with the original plans for the PS6. However, shortages and rising memory prices could force Sony to postpone the PS6 release to 2028 or 2029. Xbox has not yet announced any changes, but delays remain a possibility.

The price of Project Helix is currently unknown, but it will almost certainly be higher than the current generation. The Xbox Series X already costs around $650, so a more powerful machine is unlikely to be cheaper. Some sources even suggest the price could approach $1000 – similar to other high-end Microsoft gaming devices. Essentially, Project Helix is said to be more like a Windows-based gaming PC than a traditional console. It can run Xbox and PC games, and supports platforms like Steam and Battle.net, significantly expanding the game library. However, the Windows interface still needs further optimization to suit the console experience. Currently, the operating system doesn't offer the simplicity and smoothness of traditional console systems.

Microsoft also committed to backward compatibility for Project Helix, allowing players to continue using their existing Xbox game library. This feature has been a tradition for Xbox since the Xbox One era and is highly appreciated by the gaming community. Regarding specifications, Microsoft will continue its collaboration with AMD. Project Helix is rumored to use a Zen 6 CPU and RDNA 5 GPU, aiming for 4K gaming at 120 FPS. Some rumors even suggest the chip will be larger than that of the PS6, offering higher performance but also increasing production costs.
