To celebrate the brand's 40th anniversary, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow has been released on iOS and Android by Square Enix and KLabGames. This free-to-play spin-off marks the return of the Dragon Quest series to smartphones after a long hiatus.
According to Yuji Horii, the game is designed to be accessible, offering a quick and entertaining experience while still retaining the distinctive spirit of the series.

Roguelite gameplay with unique action.
Unlike traditional turn-based gameplay, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow adopts an action-roguelite style. Players control a team of three characters, battling waves of monsters and selecting random buffs called Blessings after each level.
This mechanism forces players to constantly adapt to each situation, creating variety in every gameplay session. The game is also optimized for one-handed play, making it suitable for mobile platforms.
Career system and tactical customization
The game retains the familiar vocation system with 5 character classes: Warrior, Mage, Priest, Martial Artist, and Thief. Each class has unique skills and interacts differently with weapons and Blessings.
Additionally, the special skill Coup de Grâce allows for a powerful finishing blow when enough energy is accumulated. The combination of class, weapons, and Blessings creates tactical depth, allowing players to develop many different playstyles.

Besides the main storyline, the game also features modes such as Gauntlet, seasonal leaderboards, and Shrine with high-difficulty bosses. These modes offer valuable rewards and increase the game's replay potential.
To celebrate its launch, the game is holding a giveaway event with many free items, helping players quickly upgrade their team. With a combination of new gameplay and familiar elements, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is expected to attract both long-time fans and new players on mobile.
