New Silent Hill titles could be revamped with Homecoming's weapon system.
Despite being highly praised in many aspects, Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake still left some players feeling unsatisfied due to its poor weapon system and less variety compared to the original version released in 2001.
One of the most disappointing aspects for players is that Pyramid Head's greatsword, initially teased as a new weapon in the remake, turned out to be just a gimmick and didn't even have a swing animation. In total, the remake only features four different weapons for players to use, fewer than the six in the original.
While the recent Silent Hill 2 remake has achieved some success, it's still too early to assess its impact on the future of the horror game series. However, with impressive sales and positive reviews from critics, this remake could certainly inspire developers to create sequels to Silent Hill. Nevertheless, the weapon system in this remake may not be an ideal model for future Silent Hill titles. Instead, Silent Hill: Homecoming, although not as highly regarded as Silent Hill 2, boasts a more unique and innovative weapon system, allowing players to seamlessly combine combat and environmental interaction.
Silent Hill: Homecoming's combat system: Pros and cons
The combat system in Silent Hill: Homecoming has been a subject of debate among gamers. While it allows players to utilize the protagonist Alex Shepherd's powerful knife combos to easily defeat enemies and bosses, it also reveals several limitations that negatively impact the combat experience.
Specifically, the camera angles in Silent Hill: Homecoming are often limited, making it difficult for players to observe and react to combat situations. Additionally, characters are easily "locked down" when performing attacks, making it harder to dodge enemy counterattacks.
Another weakness of the combat system in Silent Hill: Homecoming is the difference in aiming mechanics between melee weapons and firearms. While melee weapons allow for target locking to increase accuracy, firearms lack this feature, making aiming more difficult. Additionally, firearms have a very slow rate of fire, reducing their effectiveness in combat.
Compared to the combat system in the Silent Hill 2 remake, the new version's superiority is evident. The remake has addressed the limitations of Homecoming, offering a smoother and more fluid combat experience. The camera angle has been improved, allowing players to observe the entire battlefield. The character's movement and attack mechanics have also been refined, making dodging and counter-attacking easier. Furthermore, the remake unifies the aiming mechanism for both melee and firearms, while increasing the rate of fire of fire, enhancing combat effectiveness.
Each Silent Hill game offers a unique combat experience. The Silent Hill 2 remake feels realistic and powerful in every strike, while Homecoming focuses on more visually stunning and technically skillful moves. However, Homecoming is more successful in exploiting the diverse applications of weapons, allowing players to use them in a variety of situations, not just limited to combat.
Weapons in Silent Hill: Homecoming: Versatile and Creative
In Silent Hill: Homecoming, melee weapons are not simply tools for combat, but also keys to exploring the mysterious world of the game. Each weapon type plays a unique role in unlocking new paths, allowing players to access hidden areas and uncover the dark secrets of Silent Hill.
A unique aspect of the melee weapon system in Silent Hill: Homecoming is its diverse uses and interactions with the environment. Metal pipes and crowbars, while not as effective as knives in combat, are indispensable for exploration. Knives are used to cut through barriers, crowbars to pry open iron doors, and axes to break down wooden doors. Each weapon offers unique animations and attack sequences, contributing to the variety and appeal of the gameplay.
Although the Silent Hill 2 remake retains its action elements, Bloober Team chose not to design versatile weapons like in Silent Hill: Homecoming. This suggests that future Silent Hill games may not have a similar combat system to Homecoming. However, learning from the use of versatile weapons as in Homecoming is still a worthwhile idea, at least for games focused on action. For walking simulator games like Silent Hill: The Short Message, this gameplay style wouldn't be ideal.
