Total War: Three Kingdoms - The Turbulent Era of China's Darkest Civil War

Yesterday, Total War: Three Kingdoms officially released a trailer for its new DLC, The Eight Princes, scheduled for release on August 8th. The Eight Princes Rebellion was a civil war among princes vying for central power during the Western Jin Dynasty (226–316) in China. This civil war lasted ten years, with the key figures being the eight princes: Sima Liang, Sima Wei, Sima Lun, Sima Qing, Sima Yi, Sima Ying, Sima Yong, and Sima Yue. The Eight Princes Rebellion is considered one of the most serious imperial rebellions in Chinese history, having a severe impact on the socio-economic and political landscape, leading to the chaotic period of the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms and the downfall of the Western Jin Dynasty .

This is arguably not a new topic, but it presents a significant challenge for the development team, especially a foreign team like Creative Assembly , because it encompasses a vast period with many turbulent historical events. Successfully completing this project requires the developers to conduct in-depth research and understanding of Chinese history.

The DLC's setting is the Western Jin Dynasty (100 years after the Three Kingdoms period). Players can take on the role of one of eight vassal princes, each with a distinct style, and explore four new development paths: wealth, virtue, strength, and ideology. Based on the path chosen, the system offers different choices: establish a puppet emperor and rule the country as Regent, or seize the throne for themselves.

And instead of the common people, the eight feudal lords had to win the support of the nobles to achieve their own goals. This was perfectly consistent with the historical context at the time, when the gap between rich and poor was extremely pronounced, and all human resources were concentrated in the hands of the ruling class or the nobility.

Upon its announcement, The Eight Princes received enthusiastic support from the Chinese gaming community. Many expressed admiration for the development team's understanding of Chinese history and the characteristic aristocratic conflicts of that era. However, international gamers will likely be overwhelmed by the DLC's naming system, where Sima (Sima) is everywhere.
