Many freelancers in Los Angeles are paid to return to their daily routines to provide motion data for AI robots.

The new freelance job: bringing AI back to daily life.

In Los Angeles , a new form of freelance work is gaining attention: workers are paid to film their daily activities to help train robots.

Participants wore head-mounted cameras while cleaning, cooking, or doing housework. These first-person video clips are being used to develop the field of physical AI , where companies are trying to teach robots how to move and manipulate like humans.

Robots need human movement data.

Unlike chatbots that learn from text on the internet, robots need detailed data about real-world movements. Simple actions like picking up a sponge, stirring soup, or turning off a tap contain many details that algorithms struggle to deduce without real-world data.

The job platform company Instawork is hiring people to record these activities. Participants can earn around $80 for about two hours of usable video.

The data collected serves to fuel competition in the robotics industry among major technology companies such as Tesla and Google , as well as startups like Figure AI and Dyna Robotics .

According to Goldman Sachs ' forecast , the global market for humanoid robots could reach a value of approximately $38 billion by 2035.

Another data collection startup is Sunain , which currently has over 1,400 participants in Los Angeles and tens of thousands of contributors globally.

Although controversial, this is an opportunity for freelancers to earn extra income because the compensation is very generous.

An opportunity for income, but also a controversial one.

Some participants were able to earn a significant amount of money. One couple in Pasadena earned around $1,200 by filming themselves cooking and living in their apartment.

However, many observers worry that this work could help develop automation systems capable of replacing the very workers who are providing the data.

Nevertheless, for many participants, this remains a quick way to make money from tasks they already have to do every day.
