One of the rare arcade game machines from Nintendo has been revived using modern technology.

A Nintendo fan has recreated the 1974 arcade version of Wild Gunman using new technology, digitizing data and recreating the classic experience.

Nintendo fans revive the Wild Gunman arcade game after more than 50 years.

The game Wild Gunman has long been familiar to the Nintendo community through its NES release in 1984. However, few people know that this game actually originated from a live-action arcade version released by Nintendo in 1974. After more than half a century, a fan decided to recreate this arcade version using modern technology, bringing the classic experience back to gamers today.

This project quickly attracted the attention of the community, especially those interested in the history of the gaming industry. Recreating a classic arcade system is not only nostalgic but also plays a role in preserving a gradually disappearing technological heritage.

The original Wild Gunman game was vastly different from the NES version released in 1984.

Reel film technology and its decline over time.

The original Wild Gunman arcade version operated using four reels of film containing live-action video clips. Players used guns to shoot at the screen, and the outcome depended on the video playing. This was a pioneering technology at the time, combining electronics and film.

However, the system's major drawback lies in its durability. The reels wear out quickly due to constant playback, leading to a significant decline in quality over time. By 2026, the vast majority of Wild Gunman reels will have virtually disappeared, making the original experience extremely rare.

Callan Brown's journey of discovery and restoration

Arcade collector Callan Brown has embarked on a quest to find the remaining reels in an attempt to salvage the game. After searching from various sources, he has amassed two complete reels and a portion of a third. The final reel remains missing.

Despite the incomplete data, Brown proceeded with the reconstruction based on what he had. He rebuilt the cabinet using wood and 3D-printed details, adjusting the design to suit modern technology while still preserving the original spirit of the game.

Digitizing data and recreating the modern experience.

The most important aspect of the project lies in digitizing all the footage from the film reels. This ensures that the content of Wild Gunman is preserved digitally, completely avoiding the risk of degradation over time. This is a major step forward in preserving the history of gaming.

Additionally, the in-game gun has been upgraded with infrared technology, functioning similarly to the Wii Remote, improving accuracy and player experience. While not a perfect 1:1 replica, this restored version still largely captures the feel of the original arcade game.

Callan Brown's project not only holds personal value but also makes a significant contribution to the gaming community and researchers. In a context where many classic games are gradually disappearing, efforts like this play a crucial role in preserving the history of the digital entertainment industry.
