Warning about sophisticated counterfeit GPUs: Hollow RTX 4090s are appearing on the market.

An Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 purchased from eBay was found to be an extremely sophisticated counterfeit, with the GPU and VRAM chips being completely faked.

Fake GPUs are becoming increasingly sophisticated, deceiving even experts.

The high-end graphics card market is becoming fertile ground for scams, and the latest case from Northwest Repair shows an alarming level of sophistication. A customer bought an Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 on eBay, but upon inspection, it turned out to be a nearly perfect counterfeit GPU.

Initially, the card showed no obvious errors and the circuit board looked clean, with no signs of tampering. However, upon closer analysis, the repair team discovered that the entire GPU and VRAM chip were counterfeit.

Factory-level chip modification techniques.

The scary part lies in how the fraudsters carried it out. The original chips were ground down to erase the markings, then laser-engraved with information identical to that of a genuine GPU. Even the 'AD102-300-A1' code – the identifier for the RTX 4090 – was completely replicated.

Furthermore, the epoxy resin, solder joints, and component layout are either preserved or meticulously reworked, making detection nearly impossible with the naked eye. Only under a microscope can technicians uncover anomalies such as oil contamination at the solder joints or traces of ultrasonic cleaning.

The memory chips also had their surface layer scraped off to apply fake GDDR6X labels, creating the illusion of being completely 'genuine'.

'Hollow' GPU – unable to function

Despite having the appearance of a high-end graphics card, this GPU is actually non-functional. It contains no real processing cores, and the VRAM isn't a genuine component. This is considered one of the most sophisticated cases of a 'hollow GPU' ever recorded.

Comparing it to a real RTX 3080 reveals very subtle differences in the MLCC capacitor layout around the core – a detail that the average user would almost certainly not notice.

The source may be from an illegal supply chain.

According to Northwest Repair, the level of product refinement suggests this wasn't an individual act but likely originated from "underground factories." These entities may be recycling or repurposing old GPUs for AI purposes, then releasing counterfeit products onto the consumer market.

Amidst the surge in hardware demand driven by AI, the resulting shortages have created opportunities for scams to operate more effectively.

What should users do to avoid risks?

Experts advise users to be especially cautious when buying high-priced GPUs from third-party platforms like eBay or other unknown sources. Checking the appearance alone is not enough, and even disassembling the card does not guarantee the detection of counterfeits.

In case of doubt, users should request verification from reputable centers or report to the authorities. Such cases are often overlooked, allowing scammers to become increasingly audacious.
