Breaking Bad fans almost got to transform themselves into 'Master Bai'.

Breaking Bad is one of the most successful television series, and fans almost got to experience being Walter White in a virtual reality game project on PlayStation VR.

Breaking Bad almost got its own VR gaming experience.

In the late 2010s, virtual reality was still in its infancy, and  Sony  was actively seeking recognizable brands to persuade gamers to spend money on its PlayStation VR product. This was also the time when the  Breaking Bad universe  was at its peak, with spin-off series and sequels keeping the franchise appealing to millions of viewers.

At that time, many developers didn't intend to create massive open-world games for virtual reality, but instead focused on building short, interactive experiences that functioned like movies. These compact projects were developed to showcase the visual potential of the technology without the huge budgets and time investment required for a traditional AAA blockbuster.

And a related VR game project almost became a reality. The project was originally assigned to  Firesprite,  the game company that recently brought fans a virtual reality spin-off game. Although it's quite unfortunate that it was never officially announced, details about the project have recently surfaced, revolving around how the development team once wanted to use this technology to immerse players in the criminal underworld.

A regrettable cancellation.

Vince Gilligan, the man behind the entire Breaking Bad franchise  ,  reportedly worked closely with  Sony Interactive Entertainment  on the project back in 2017. In an interview on  Inside the Gilliverse,  Gilligan revealed that his team actually spent time discussing three to four different ideas for multiple video games. He admitted that  "making a video game is really difficult,"  and that a single project can take years and cost millions of dollars to complete.

Despite dedicating "many hours" to this virtual reality game project, it ultimately failed to meet Gilligan's expectations. Reportedly, the creator didn't want to lower their standards for the game to be released, so it was ultimately canceled entirely. The canceled project was envisioned as a story-driven journey, rather than a simple shooter/action game. The developers wanted to take players through iconic moments of  Breaking Bad,  putting them directly in the shoes of the main character throughout the story.

Reports from MP1st indicate that players can explore the  White family's famous garden,  including the swimming pool that served as the backdrop for many tense confrontations. Another confirmed location is the vast New Mexico desert, where the characters frequently engage in their most dangerous and illegal activities. This will allow users to stand right next to the legendary RV while the sun shines down on the sand, making them feel as though they are actually part of a methamphetamine production operation.

Breaking Bad VR  is just one of many projects  Firesprite  has had to abandon due to various challenges in the gaming industry. Recently, the company was also developing a Battle Royale game based on the series, but had to cancel it after a round of layoffs.

Furthermore, a concept sketch for a top-secret science fiction horror game, developed between 2018 and 2020, was also found. This game is said to have many segments reminiscent of, and although it possesses some thematic similarities to,  The Persistence,  the artist who created it described the project as a completely original brand, and it never progressed beyond the initial testing phase.
