The director of The Blood of Dawnwalker doesn't mind being compared to The Witcher 3.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is set in 14th-century Europe and shares significant similarities with The Witcher 3.
Even the protagonist, Coen, a half-vampire, carries a similar theme to Geralt – a monster in human form that ordinary people need to fight against the true villains.
Given the similarities, it's no surprise that The Blood of Dawnwalker is compared to The Witcher 3. Even game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz stated that he felt "really comfortable. I feel very confident about my game."
In addition to his role as game director for The Witcher 3, Tomaszkiewicz is also the story writer/screenwriter for The Witcher 3 and the principal quest designer, as well as the second director and head of production for Cyberpunk 2077. He founded his own studio, Rebel Wolves, in 2022 to create new projects, which he calls 'open-world, story-focused games with some surprise elements'.
These key elements in The Blood of Dawnwalker are crucial, including a more impactful day/night cycle, with Coen only able to utilize his full vampire abilities at night. There's also a time pressure element that Cyberpunk 2077 lacks – The Blood of Dawnwalker expects you to make responsible choices about side quests. You won't have enough time to do everything in one playthrough.
"Establishing a new company to do exactly what we've done in the past is a challenge," Tomaszkiewicz said, "because we wouldn't feel like we're evolving or developing ourselves. That's really important to us as artists. We want to push the boundaries of AAA RPGs by adding some adventurous elements, which gives you a deeper, more emotional role-playing experience and a different feel to the game."
And while happy that their new game is being compared to a beloved title like The Witcher 3 (even the music is reminiscent of it), Tomaszkiewicz doesn't want Rebel Wolves to become a second CD Projekt. Currently, Rebel Wolves has 160 employees, and his dream for The Blood of Dawnwalker is that it will be successful enough to fund two more games of similar scale.
"Our team's vision is to maintain the current scale," he said. "We might need help in some areas after this game launches, so we might expand a bit more. But I'm afraid that if we expand any further, we'll lose the communication and processes we have now. I want Rebel Wolves to remain the same size 10 years from now."
