Epic Games faces backlash after firing a terminally ill employee.
Epic Games sent shockwaves through the entire gaming industry when it unexpectedly announced the layoff of 1,000 employees. The outrage peaked when the community discovered that a developer suffering from terminal cancer was also on the layoff list, resulting in him losing all his life insurance benefits.
Among those affected were veteran programmers who had been with Fortnite since its early days, and the artist who conceived the iconic character Jonesy. However, the most heartbreaking story belonged to developer Michael Prinke. On Facebook, his wife, Jenni Griffin, painfully shared that her husband lost his life insurance while battling a terrible brain cancer because of a cruel decision to fire him from his company.
Ironically, in addition to battling death without an income, the Prinke family is now unable to purchase a new life insurance policy due to regulations that exclude pre-existing medical conditions. Ms. Griffin has strongly criticized Epic Games' management for removing her husband from the policy despite being aware of his critical health condition.
She frankly stated that the top management at the game company completely failed to understand the devastating humanitarian consequences behind the layoffs, and only viewed dedicated individuals like Michael Prinke as meaningless numbers on a report. Her post urgently appealed to the online community to share it in the hope that Epic Games would reconsider and take action to resolve this desperate situation.
Faced with the Prinke family's plight, fans and the online community couldn't hide their anger. A barrage of criticism was directed at Epic Games and CEO Tim Sweeney, calling the decision cruel and inhumane. Many players questioned whether the company truly felt satisfied saving money by taking away a lifeline from an employee on the brink of death.
For a game considered one of the biggest "money-making machines" in the industry like Fortnite, the continuous layoffs under such dire circumstances are severely damaging the company's image. The community is constantly condemning Epic Games for turning its back on long-time employees like Michael Prinke – individuals who have contributed significantly with their sweat and intellect to building the company's enormous wealth today.
