Pearl Abyss officially removes AI imagery from Crimson Desert following a wave of criticism.
From its clunky controls to a rather disjointed storyline, this open-world blockbuster clearly didn't have the perfect start that Pearl Abyss had hoped for. However, the most serious crisis came when gamers discovered AI-generated artwork within Crimson Desert.
As soon as the AI-generated artwork was discovered, a fierce backlash from the gaming community immediately erupted. Despite the significant controversy, the reason Crimson Desert continued to break records for concurrent players for weeks after its release was thanks to Pearl Abyss's unprecedented customer service efforts.
According to a user on platform X, the developers quickly removed all AI-generated artwork in the latest update, replacing it with hand-drawn paintings by real artists.
The post provided a visual comparison of the same artwork before and after the patch, showing a significant improvement in artistic quality and a much more soulful feel after removing the AI intervention. The gaming community praised this swift action, affirming that the effort put into collecting in-game artwork now truly has meaning.
Back when the controversy first broke out, Pearl Abyss explained that these AI images were actually drafts accidentally left behind in the official release, and pledged to remove them all from Crimson Desert. The fact that the South Korean developer kept its promise and included realistic human-like artwork in the game delighted fans.
To date, Pearl Abyss can be said to be demonstrating masterful post-launch support. They consistently listen to community feedback and don't hesitate to adjust or remove elements that cause frustration in the game experience, such as rebalancing the difficulty of previous bosses.
