Crimson Desert stages a spectacular comeback on Metacritic.

Initially met with skepticism and met with numerous negative reviews upon its release, Pearl Abyss's Crimson Desert has made an impressive comeback. images 1 of Crimson Desert stages a spectacular comeback on Metacritic.

Crimson Desert's launch was a real challenge. The sheer scale of the open world seemed to exceed the development team's ability to optimize and perfect it within a limited timeframe. As a result, the game received rather harsh reviews on its release day, even being rated lower than Dragon Age Veilguard on Steam. This divergence was also evident in media coverage on launch day, with critics scoring only 77 points.

However, the gaming community's opinion quickly shifted in an astonishing way. Despite plot flaws and the controversial dragon-riding mechanic with its 50-minute cooldown, Crimson Desert's excellent gameplay foundation gradually won over fans. Currently, the game boasts an impressive user score of 8.8 on Metacritic, comfortably sitting in second place for 2026, only behind the blockbuster Resident Evil Requiem.images 2 of Crimson Desert stages a spectacular comeback on Metacritic.

Besides technical and balance issues, Crimson Desert also faced controversy regarding the use of AI in game asset design. Listening to community feedback, developer Pearl Abyss quickly addressed the issue, drastically removing the AI elements and replacing them with artwork created by professional artists.

Thanks to its proactive approach and continuous release of quality-improving updates that have been warmly received by players, Crimson Desert is increasingly solidifying its position. Not stopping there, Pearl Abyss is currently planning to further expand this world through DLCs and, in particular, the addition of a multiplayer mode.

This is considered a very logical move, because the core of the project was originally conceived as a massively multiplayer online game before shifting its focus to a single-player role-playing experience.
