Winrose, a pirate survival game, made an impressive debut.
As a brand new franchise exploring the pirate theme, Windrose quickly garnered attention with over 200,000 pirates embarking on their "Grand Voyage".
The newly released pirate survival game has sold over 1 million copies.
The world of pirates officially welcomes another promising newcomer, Windrose, which sold over 1 million copies within the first 6 days of its release on April 14th. This success is certainly quite unexpected, especially considering the already vast number of open-world survival games available.
Currently, the developers of Kraken Express are focused on maintaining a steady stream of new players. The game has reached over 220,000 concurrent players on Steam, making it one of the most talked-about games of this spring.
Initially intended as a large-scale multiplayer online game focusing on PvP mechanics, the development team of approximately 60 people decided to shift to a purchase-based PvE adventure. This change stemmed from the development team's desire to focus on ground-based combat gameplay and adopt a "Souls-lite" style, along with a deep survival mechanic that the team believed would attract a larger community.
The results clearly exceeded expectations, with the game quickly climbing the sales charts. The developers admitted that to achieve this, they had to almost completely rebuild the core system of the game to deliver a traditional survival experience. Recently, Kraken Express confirmed a total of 1 million copies sold across all platforms, including the Epic Games Store. Of course, this also presented technical challenges due to the large number of players accessing the game.
Developers worked tirelessly to address server stability and multiplayer connectivity issues during the first weekend after launch. A recent patch was also rolled out, adding manual server selection and automatic data backups. These served as temporary solutions while awaiting more permanent fixes. However, this clearly didn't deter the gaming community from returning to the game.
Windrose offers a range of noteworthy features.
On Steam, Windrose has received "Very Positive" reviews with 89% of ratings. Most people praise the game for its good optimization and depth, which many current "AAAA" games can't even achieve (a subtle hint – Ubisoft's pirate-themed game is marketed as a "4A" game but its quality is almost negligible).
In this game, players take on the role of a once-powerful pirate captain who lost everything after an attack by the legendary pirate Blackbeard. Left amidst the ruins of his former life, the protagonist must find a way to survive on a mysterious coastline, gradually reclaiming his place in the pirate world.
This "Pirate Age" setting offers a dark and supernatural atmosphere as players uncover hidden secrets throughout the environment. The game encourages players to recruit various NPCs in their new settlement, increasing productivity and ultimately leading a new fleet. The focus on the story of reclaiming power adds momentum to the standard survival loop gameplay, such as resource gathering and base building.
The ship controls are inspired by what many developers consider the "gold standard" for the pirate genre. But when fighting on land, the game leans towards a "Souls-lite" style, focusing on parrying and dodging rather than continuous attacks. Many players also compare the crafting and base-building elements to popular titles like Valheim , finding the development system satisfying and well-rounded despite being in early access.
Solo players can experience the game offline, but if they want to play with friends, they can create their own private servers or join dedicated servers to face bosses together. The game's sales continue to impress, solidifying its position as a breakout indie phenomenon. Currently, it is the best-selling title on Steam in the US market and the second best-selling title globally.
Although the game is currently PC exclusive, the developers have indicated they may work on PS5 and Xbox versions once the official version 1.0 is released. Currently, the development team is focused on expanding the world and refining existing features. Furthermore, the collaboration with Pocketpair has contributed to the game gaining significant attention in the Japanese community. With millions of users adding the game to their Wishlists and a growing community on Discord, the game's future is sure to be even brighter.
