Counter-Strike 2 shocks with update that makes excess ammo disappear.

Valve has just delivered a devastating blow to the reloading habits of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) players. From now on, if you reload when the magazine is still full, the excess ammunition will disappear permanently instead of accumulating as it has for the past two decades.

For a long time, FPS players have had the habit of constantly pressing the R key to refill their magazines after firing a few shots. However, starting with this week's update, if you maintain that habit in CS2, you'll pay dearly. Valve has officially implemented a real-time ammo management system: any remaining ammo in the magazine when you reload will be permanently lost. Instead of being magically added to the "shared ammo pool" as it has been for the past 24 years, each reload means you're completely discarding any excess ammo from your old magazine.

This change transformed CS2 from a purely reflex-based shooter into a "hardcore" game, rivaling military simulation masterpieces like Escape from Tarkov or, more recently, Helldivers II. With a default ammunition capacity of only three magazines, players are forced to carefully consider their options: Should they risk reloading after a small skirmish, or should they save half a magazine to avoid running out of firepower at the end of the round? CS2 is even more unforgiving than Arma—which allowed players to save unfinished magazines for later use—with its harsh "throw away" rule.

Of course, not everyone is willing to give up their reflexes from 2000. For nostalgic gamers who find the new rules too harsh, Valve has opened a small escape: a return to CS:GO. However, this predecessor now only exists as a hidden "legacy" on Steam. You won't be able to find it through the search bar; you have to access it directly from your library or external link. More importantly, you'll have to accept playing on community servers or LAN networks, as Valve has completely "unplugged" the official CS:GO server system.

Besides the shock regarding ammunition, this update also brings a few notable tweaks such as a map tutorial feature in ranked matches and the ability to directly join custom modes from your friends list. But clearly, re-teaching millions of gamers how to reload is Valve's biggest ambition in elevating the tactical level of its beloved game.
