Transforming Xbox Series X into a 'high-end' gaming PC: Installing an RTX 5060 into the console's case.
While Microsoft is still keeping quiet about its Xbox-PC "hybrid" project, a YouTuber named PhasedTech has taken a step ahead by cramming a full powerful Windows configuration inside the shell of an Xbox Series X.
This project wasn't simply a matter of "replacing the internals," but a feat of component arrangement. To maintain the distinctive form factor of the Xbox Series X, along with the original optical drive and buttons, PhasedTech had to abandon the conventional mini-ITX motherboard (which is too thick). Instead, they used the Intel NUC 12 Extreme Compute Element – a kind of "PC on a graphics card" that maximizes space efficiency.
A truly impressive configuration.
Despite fitting neatly into the compact form factor of a console, this hybrid "monster" boasts specifications that would make many gaming PCs wary:
-
CPU: Intel Core i7-12700 (12 cores).
-
RAM: 32GB DDR4.
-
Graphics: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5060 slim design (LP) dedicated graphics card.
-
Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD.
-
Power source: Flex-ATX 600W, neatly housed inside the machine.
To make this a reality, the YouTuber had to use a Dremel grinder to "shape" the internal plastic frame, and also 3D-print a series of custom brackets to secure the components. Even the rear I/O panel was completely 3D-printed to reveal the PC's ports such as USB-C, DisplayPort, and Wi-Fi antenna.
Performance: Outperforms the stock machine.
The most impressive aspect of this build is its real-world performance. When testing the game Arc Raiders at 1080p resolution (High settings), the system easily achieved 100-140 FPS, far exceeding the typical 60 FPS found on current console systems. At some other settings, this number even surged to 250 FPS.
Surprisingly, despite the densely packed components, the cooling system with a single 120mm fan performed extremely effectively, keeping both the CPU and GPU below 75°C under full load.
Making Microsoft's dream a reality.
PhasedTech's mod appears at a sensitive time, as rumors about Microsoft's Project Helix are spreading. This project is believed to be the software giant's attempt to blur the lines between Xbox and PC on next-generation hardware.
While awaiting an official response from Microsoft, PhasedTech's custom build is the clearest proof that a device with the appearance of a console but the soul of a powerful PC is no longer science fiction.
