The classic 40-year-old shooter game Gradius has been completely remade with ASCII graphics for PC.

In an era of incredibly hardware-intensive games, one developer has surprised everyone by reviving the classic Gradius (1985) entirely with text. Battle for Asciion is not just a retro game, but a truly "pure ASCII" experience, challenging the limits of traditional pixel graphics.

In the context of a hardware market reeling from the "RAMpocalypse" crisis, Battle for Asciion emerged as a true savior. This side-scrolling shooter proudly declared: "What you see is what you get — it's all text." There are no character images, no textures, and no hidden PNG files. All the flying bullets and spaceships are made up of pure ASCII characters.

'Lightweight' configuration amidst soaring prices.

What most excites the gaming community is its extremely low hardware requirements. While blockbuster titles in 2026 demand tens of GB of RAM, Battle for Asciion only requires a 2.0 GHz dual-core CPU and a mere 4GB of RAM. However, don't let the words fool you; the speed and pace of the matches are incredibly smooth, retaining the drama and difficulty that are hallmarks of the Gradius series.

Relevo, a veteran name in the retro gaming scene since 2009, has delivered five lengthy levels featuring colossal bosses assembled from thousands of characters. Players can still collect items to upgrade their firepower, transforming their ASCII ship into a true mobile fortress.

A nostalgic experience on modern hardware.

Despite being a text-based game, the developers still paid attention to the visuals with display modes inspired by classic CRT monitors: from scanline effects to the characteristic green and amber tones of old MSX or PCW machines.

A unique feature called 'Textshot' was also introduced. Instead of saving screenshots as regular image files, 'Textshot' outputs a .TXT file. You can open it with Notepad, edit it, share it, or even print it out as a true ASCII artwork.

Maximum support for 'handheld consoles'

Although the keyboard experience offers the most authentic "hacker" feel, Battle for Ascension still fully supports controllers via Steam Input and is certified to be perfectly compatible with Steam Deck. This allows gamers to enjoy the thrill of shooting anytime, anywhere on their handheld console.

In fact, Battle for Ascension originated from a 2012 web version during the heyday of Flash. Reviving this project on Steam in 2026 is not only a treat for nostalgic fans, but also proof that creativity and innovative gameplay are what determine a game's value, not the number of polygons or 8K resolution.
