Borderlands 4 has just received its first major DLC.

The less-than-smooth launch of Borderlands 4 meant many missed out on one of the better first-person shooter games.

Sometimes awkward comedic situations and a significant number of bugs caused Borderlands 4 to fall short of critical acclaim upon release, and also cost it a place on our list of the best FPS games. It's a pretty good collectible shooter, like other installments in the series, and while the improved storyline makes it more enjoyable, it's hampered by performance issues that detract from the experience. Now, after updates and bug fixes, the game is better than ever – and with the first story DLC and a discounted offer, now is the best time to start playing.

Borderlands 4 may be the fourth main installment in this long-running series, but it's both a great starting point and an excellent sequel, appealing to both new players and fans. Ignoring details related to the old storyline, you play as one of four (now five, if you own the DLC) Treasure Hunters, each with different action skills and a unique skill tree that allows you to confront the Timekeeper, the tyrannical lord of Kairos.

Unlike Borderlands 3 with its outdated pop culture details and forced humor, Borderlands 4 offers a much more serious storyline, but still doesn't lack humorous moments. The constant threat from the Timekeeper to you (and possibly your Vault Hunter friends) is genuinely frightening, and that makes for a more engaging experience. Of course, all of that is secondary to what the Borderlands series has always done best – loot and combat.

Each enemy has the potential to drop powerful weapons, allowing you to acquire a variety of potentially game-changing weapons. These might simply make you stronger, create mini-black holes, or even give you an SMG that transforms into a powerful sniper rifle with the push of a button. In particular, bosses will shower you with rainbow loot after defeating them—yellow and purple sparks scattered across the floor, waiting to be used in subsequent battles.

The Story Pack 1 bonus content pack lets you control C4SH, the new treasure hunter, and takes you to the new map, The Whispering Glacier, to face two new bosses and 16 sub-bosses as you team up with Ellie, Moxxi's daughter and a talented mechanic, hoping to destroy an alien monolithic rock and enter the Cursed Vault (Vault of the Damned).

Both the original version and the Deluxe version (including DLC) are currently 30% off on Steam.
