Eidos Montreal cancels Wildlands after… 7 years of development!

According to Insider Gaming, the reason Eidos Montreal laid off 124 employees was because the company had to cancel Wildlands – a game that had been in development since 2019.

At the end of 2025, Insider Gaming revealed the existence of the project and stated that the game was nicknamed P11 – as it was the company's 11th project.

To date, their sources indicate that the project has faced numerous difficulties over the years, such as: four changes to the software framework, conflicts over the narrative direction, and production costs exceeding several hundred million USD.

In particular, the game's exorbitant production costs forced Eidos Montreal to cancel a number of projects – including the cancellation of a new Deus Ex game in January 2024.

The video (submitted to Insider Gaming under a privacy policy) reveals Wildlands to be a third-person action-adventure game with an open-world design.

In the game, you play as a character named River. River is a member of the Spiritbounds, a group of people who can banish evil spirits with their magical staffs.

River's companion is a deer-like creature named Redheart, and players can ride Redheart to explore the map.

However, the strangest thing about Wildlands is that the game was nearly complete before being canceled. The project had recently reached several key milestones and entered the 'debug' phase, with a projected release date later this year.

It's possible that Embracer Group – the parent company of Eidos Montreal – felt the game wouldn't be able to generate enough revenue to recoup its enormous production costs, and therefore decided to cancel the project.

As for why the company took so long to cancel the project, that remains a huge mystery.
