The post-apocalyptic survival shooter game franchise Metro seems to be getting a new installment.

According to a leaker who previously revealed details about the PlayStation State of Play event, the post-apocalyptic survival shooter series Metro will have a sequel announced very soon.

Adapted from the novel of the same name, the game franchise was once considered one of the most successful FPS series ever. The games received overwhelmingly positive reviews for their ability to build a deeply immersive post-apocalyptic world, their tight storylines, and their impressive blend of action and horror elements. The latest game in the series, released in 2019, has led to continued anticipation among fans for a new installment.

With its spin-off winning Best VR Game at The Game Awards 2024, it's clear the community's affection for this post-apocalyptic game hasn't waned. And luckily for those patiently waiting, an announcement about the next installment may be coming sooner than expected. 

In a Twitter post by AlexandreNGamR (Alir), he claimed that a new Metro game project will be announced next week. Alir previously stated that a PlayStation State of Play event would take place on April 16th. This claim is further supported by the reputable leaker Nate the Hate, who has accurately leaked many Nintendo-related rumors in 2026.

Be optimistic, but stay grounded.

A completely new game could leverage current hardware power to create a world even more impressive than what appears in previous versions. Simultaneously, with improved lighting systems in modern games, the horror element will undoubtedly be more effective.

The enemy's AI enhancements could create more complex confrontations, while also opening up the possibility of a richer and more diverse weapon system. However, the game will need new characters, as the previous game has already concluded the storyline in the most complete way possible.

It's highly likely this new game will take a similar approach to Metro Awakening, serving as a standalone story, or even the beginning of a new Metro trilogy. However, the leaker insists that it's too early to take it completely until there's an official announcement from the developer. But if the rumors are accurate, the fanbase will undoubtedly be thrilled and hopeful about the potential for pushing new technological boundaries.
