Sony plans a massive price increase for the PS5 series.

Sony is preparing for a large-scale price increase for its PlayStation 5 (PS5) console across Europe. This adjustment is expected to affect the entire current product range, including the PS5 Slim, PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal handheld console.

Typically, as a console's lifecycle progresses, its price tends to decrease rather than increase. However, the unpredictable volatility of the current memory industry is dealing a significant blow to the gaming market.

According to leaked information from Gyo, a well-known French tech leaker, Sony will soon make an official announcement about this price increase. Specifically, the price of the PS5 Slim is expected to increase from 550 euros to 650 euros, while the PS5 Pro will reach 800 euros instead of the previous 700 euros. For the PlayStation Portal streaming device, the price will also increase from 230 euros to 250 euros.

Gyo is considered a highly reliable source, as he currently runs a video game store in France and previously accurately predicted the price increase of the Xbox Series X|S. The most worrying aspect is that this adjustment will make the retail price of the PS5 significantly more expensive than its competitor, the Xbox Series X|S. Furthermore, the price of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is also likely to be pushed up due to the same pressure from increased memory costs.

Console sales were expected to boom this year, largely thanks to the hype surrounding the blockbuster GTA 6, which is scheduled to launch exclusively on the console later this year. However, the sudden price increase will undoubtedly have a negative impact on previous sales forecasts.

Regarding plans for the next generation, current reports indicate that both Sony and Microsoft remain on track for the announced holiday release schedule in 2027.
