The horror game Hellraiser: Revival has passed ESRB censorship, ready for the most terrifying experience.
2026 is poised to become one of the most successful timelines for the horror genre, with Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival poised to join the race soon after successfully passing the ESRB.
The first horror game about pinheads to pass the ESRB.
In recent years, the horror game community has been experiencing a golden age. A plethora of Resident Evil remakes, new Silent Hill installments , and the return of Fatal Frame have contributed to a myriad of diverse experiences. Furthermore, a wave of high-quality indie horror games has been making its mark, promising to be one of the most noteworthy additions to the genre.
This is the first offline game project about Cenobites and his kin, aiming for developer Saber Interactive 's "no-holds-barred" approach to deliver the most realistic gore and sexual horror experience possible. Recently, the game developer announced that the game has been approved by the ESRB and "no cuts are required." The ESRB is a classification and rating system for entertainment products to help consumers understand the content a game or film will offer.
Games labeled M (Mature) typically include elements of violence, gore, sex, or drug use, along with other "adult" themes. This rating is fairly common for most horror games, such as Resident Evil 7 and Outlast 2. But not all games receive an M rating for the same reason, and Hellraiser: Revival is expected to push the boundaries of content even further.
In an interview with IGN, Saber Interactive's Creative Director, Tim Willits, confirmed that Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival has officially received an ESRB rating without any edits or cuts. Willits stated that the development team 'didn't have to remove anything' for the game to pass the rating board's review process.
The expectation is to bring Hellraiser: Revival to a more mature audience.
Tim Willits also added that Saber is currently working with other age rating organizations around the world, and the team believes they 'will do very well' in bringing a 'mature game for a mature audience' to market. He previously shared with IGN that Saber wants to go 'as far as possible' to stay true to the brand's signature graphic horror and sexual elements. Therefore, fans of extremely gory horror games may find themselves on a chilling yet captivating journey.
The initial trailers for Hellraiser: Revival clearly showed interwoven elements of sex and violence, reflecting the BDSM influence and themes that characterize this popular horror franchise. However, it's worth noting that ESRB ratings only apply in the US and Canada, so it remains unclear whether there will be edited or toned-down versions to pass censorship in Europe, Australia, and Japan.
As of now, the developer has not announced a specific release date for the game. However, in many previous instances, a game receiving an ESRB rating is often a sign that its official release date is very close.
