The Super Switch HD mod allows for pure 1080p digital output.
Without needing expensive emulators or FPGA consoles, engineer Stanislav Parhomovich has unveiled a solution to "modify" the original hardware, allowing the classic Super Nintendo (SNES) to output sharp images via HDMI.
Bringing analog consoles from the 90s to modern TVs has always been a headache for game preservation enthusiasts. Instead of using external adapters that are prone to interference and lag, the Super Switch HD mod directly interferes with the internal workings of the SNES to extract a pure digital video signal.
Extracting original data: Saying goodbye to analog signals.
The biggest difference with Super Switch HD lies in how it processes images. Instead of taking a processed analog signal and converting it, this mod "steals" data directly from the digital bus inside the device's video processor. As a result, the HDMI output image is constructed from the original data, preserving every pixel and detail without any loss.
Notably, this mod also integrates the ability to upscale internally to 1080p resolution. Players can flexibly switch between the classic 4:3 aspect ratio or the full-screen 16:9 ratio according to their preference.
The secret weapon: A specialized image buffer.
One of the nightmares of playing SNES games on a modern TV is signal loss when the game's resolution changes abruptly (for example, when switching from a menu to a game screen). On older CRT monitors, this worked smoothly, but with HDMI, it's a synchronization challenge.
To address this issue effectively, Super Switch HD features a dedicated image buffer. This buffer acts as a "transfer station," maintaining a stable HDMI signal and compensating for real-time resolution changes. As a result, the gaming experience is seamless, eliminating annoying screen flickering.
Experience "antiques" in a modern way.
For hardcore gamers who only trust original hardware rather than emulators like Analogue Super Nt or Polymega, Parhomovich's creation is the perfect solution. It allows you to retain the soul of the legendary 16-bit machine while still enjoying the top-notch display quality of the 21st century.
Currently, Super Switch HD is still in the prototype stage and has no official release date. However, given the reputation of the previous MegaSwitch HD mod for the Sega Genesis, enthusiasts have every right to expect a revolution for the SNES system in the near future.
