Nintendo of America officially announced today that it will implement a different pricing policy for Switch 2 in the US market starting in May 2026. Accordingly, the suggested retail price for the physical and digital versions of the same game will no longer be the same.
This policy will be implemented first with the new game Yoshi and the Mysterious Book . According to pre-order information, the physical version costs $70 (approximately 1,780,000 VND), while the digital version is $10 cheaper, at $60 (approximately 1,520,000 VND). Nintendo calls this model 'floating pricing'.
Previously, several Switch 2 games launched with a uniform price: Donkey Kong: Banana Blast had both digital versions priced at $69.99 (approximately 1,780,000 VND), while Mario Kart: World maintained a price of $79.99 (approximately 2,030,000 VND) for both. Compared to these titles, Yoshi's new product is the first to proactively lower the price of the digital version to create a clear price difference.
Nintendo stated that the experience remains the same regardless of which version players choose. The price adjustment reflects differences in production and distribution costs, while also providing more options for consumers. In fact, in some markets, such as the UK, the issue of physical copies being more expensive than digital versions has existed for some time.
Analysts believe this move is related to rising global production costs. Demand for hardware to support AI data centers is driving up the prices of components such as memory and storage. Although Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa previously stated there were no plans to increase the price of the console, the market still predicts that the company may eliminate the entry-level $449 version and focus on selling bundle packages starting from $499 (approximately 12,700,000 VND) to offset costs.
