A game project under the Fallout franchise appears to have been quietly canceled.
While the Fallout fan community awaits information about a sequel or rumored remasters, a reputable journalist recently revealed details about a secretly canceled Fallout game project.
An unidentified Fallout project appears to have been canceled.
In recent weeks, there have been several notable signals related to the Fallout franchise, such as suspicious activity on Steam and related product listings. This led some fans to believe that an announcement about a Fallout 3 remaster or Fallout: New Vegas was imminent. However, a fairly reputable reporter in the video game community unexpectedly poured cold water on this with their latest revelation.
In the latest episode of The Jeff Gerstmann Show , Jeff Gerstmann stated that he knows about a 'Fallout project' in development at another Microsoft studio, but according to him, it 'probably never gets released.' The related commentary begins at 2:48:52 in the video. Prior to this independent podcast, Gerstmann served as editorial director at GameSpot for a decade and later co-founded Giant Bomb. Therefore, many believe his assessment carries more credibility than most other rumors.
Gerstmann didn't reveal the game's genre, whether it's a main installment in the series or a spin-off, nor which Microsoft studio developed it. For many fans, the ideal studio besides Bethesda to work on Fallout is Obsidian Entertainment , given their previous development. However, how Obsidian will fit this project into their development schedule remains unclear, especially since the studio recently released Grounded 2 (Early Access), Avowed , and The Outer Worlds 2. Even so, Gerstmann didn't explicitly state that this project was being developed by Obsidian.
Fans are eagerly awaiting news about the new Fallout game.
Although not explicitly stated, these may not be remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, or at least that's what fans hope. Gerstmann stated that he believes the Fallout 3 remaster "has been outsourced to an outside company." One fan theory suggests that Virtuos— the company responsible for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered— is working on this project, while another company will be remastering Fallout: New Vegas. Of course, all of this is under Bethesda's supervision.
For its part, Bethesda is currently focusing its resources on launching the PS5 version of the sci-fi game. Additionally, the company must invest in a project that was announced in 2018. Therefore, more detailed information about Fallout 5 will likely have to wait for several more years. Gerstmann also stated that Bethesda Game Studios may expand its workforce before outsourcing Fallout or The Elder Scrolls – or at least the main storyline games.
While there's no concrete information yet, Bethesda's Todd Howard previously stated that the Fallout franchise is Bethesda's "most focused" on, including the television series. Howard also indicated that events from the Fallout series would become part of the official timeline of Fallout 5 , although this hasn't been confirmed. Details about the canceled Fallout title may be revealed in the future if this information is accurate. But one thing is certain: Bethesda understands the growing demand from fans for new Fallout games.
