Overwatch Co-Creator Returns to Market with New Game Project
Jeff Kaplan, co-creator of Overwatch and vice president at Blizzard, has officially returned to the gaming industry, announcing a brand-new project inspired by the Wild West.
Jeff Kaplan returns with a new cowboy game project.
Overwatch is one of the most popular superhero shooter game franchises today, playing a key role in driving the genre's growth upon its release in 2016. Prior to that, the game was developed under the codename Titan, and Blizzard brought in Jeff Kaplan to help complete the project. After Titan was canceled, Kaplan played a major role in transforming the game's concept and some of its original gameplay mechanics into what fans experience in Overwatch.
Overwatch's tight shooting mechanics, vibrant graphics, and distinctive characters made it a huge success, earning it the Game of the Year award in 2016 upon its release, and making Jeff Kaplan the game's ambassador. In April 2021, Kaplan officially left Blizzard and virtually disappeared from the gaming industry. However, he recently made a comeback in an interview with Lex Fridman on the popular host's YouTube channel.
In the video, Kaplan officially announced his independent game project, Kintsugiyama , an open-world shooter set in the Wild West. The game is said to take place during the California Gold Rush era, drawing inspiration from the era of Western films.
The debut trailer showcased incredibly explosive gunfights, featuring a variety of weapons popular at the time, such as pistols, sniper rifles, shotguns, and more. Along with first-person shooter gameplay, The Legend of California also seemed to include many other gameplay styles, from hunting to mining.
Together with friends, they formed their own gang.
The trailer's ending also reveals the ability to gather resources, as players transport wood to an unfinished construction site. Jeff Kaplan's return to the gaming industry is welcome, and while comparisons to similar games may be immediately made, there is still plenty of room for exploration and innovation in the Wild West genre.
While other games often fulfill the cowboy dream, most are for lone cowboys. With The Legend of California, players can join friends in various activities and build their own "gang." The FPS gameplay is also particularly well-suited to a Wild West-inspired game, and the stunning scenery and tight gameplay promise an engaging experience.
Kaplan has extensive experience in leading unique shooter titles, with Overwatch continuing to receive support to this day based on the foundation he helped build. Kintsugiyama's new game seems poised to continue that trend, with a diverse range of activities that could keep the game engaging for a wide variety of fans. While it doesn't yet have a release date, the game is expected to launch in Early Access in 2026. Fans can add the game to their Steam Wishlist for more information about this new title.
