The author of the Metro novel series reveals the potential of the 2039 game.

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the Metro novels, recently shared his thoughts on the content of the Metro 2039 game, asserting that it is the darkest version to date.

The author of the Metro novels claims the new project will be extremely terrifying.

Fans have been waiting a new game in the post-apocalyptic shooter franchise for a long time, and a leak revealed an announcement for the next project, which we later learned was  Metro 2039.  Xbox has officially confirmed its existence and a First Look video will be released at midnight on April 17th. Like previous installments,  Metro 2039  is being developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. Beyond that, not many details of the game have been revealed.

According to a brief description in the initial teaser, players will venture into  the "dark heart of post-apocalyptic Moscow."  Recently, the author of the  Metro novels,  Dmitry Glukhovsky, stated that the new game will be  "darker than anything else"  players have ever seen. This is no small feat, but it's relatively reasonable given the context of the series.  4A Games  was founded in Ukraine, and the  Metro brand  – both in the games and novels – heavily explores anti-war themes within a Russian setting.

Therefore, the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in 2014 and escalated throughout the 2020s, must have profoundly influenced the novels. This political context became even more tense since the last game, when Russia called for Glukhovsky's arrest in 2022 after he repeatedly spoke out against the war and the Russian government. Given the changed geopolitical landscape since Metro Exodus, it's understandable that the sequel would be darker and more intense.

Expecting new things

Even before 4A Games announced Metro 2039, they had hinted at developing a project in this direction. To celebrate the series' 15th anniversary, the studio confirmed that the next Metro installment would further emphasize political elements, with the development team drawing inspiration from real-world experiences during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. As games now move beyond their original source material, Metro 2039 draws even more from the real world, promising a grittier and more serious experience than ever before.

Whatever the game will bring, longtime fans finally have something concrete to look forward to. While Metro Awakening is one of the best VR games of 2024, the Metro series hasn't had a non-VR release since 2019. It's still unclear how long players will have to wait for Metro 2039 to launch, but at least things are starting to move, and it seems there's still plenty to look forward to.
