Bungie is committed to providing long-term support for Marathon regardless of sales.
Contrary to many pessimistic predictions, the spin-off shooter Marathon avoided the same fate as Concord, maintaining a stable player base on Steam. However, Bungie's project was a commercial disappointment for Sony, selling only 1.2 million copies, with the PS5 platform contributing a mere 19% of total sales.
Despite being highly praised by critics for its looping gameplay mechanics, Marathon faced a wave of criticism from gamers due to its excessively high difficulty. Nevertheless, despite its disappointing launch and mixed reviews, developer Bungie has officially confirmed plans to maintain and develop the game for many years to come.
Although it hasn't yet reached the heights of its rival Arc Raiders, the game has built a core player base that promises to expand further if the development team continues to make sensible adjustments. In its PC performance optimization guide, Bungie affirms its long-term commitment to the project. The company also reassured fans that the game will be continuously updated, and every aspect of the game will be improved based on real-world feedback from the community.
Bungie further shared that, similar to how they refined the game's graphics based on initial fan feedback, Marathon's performance on PC will also be gradually optimized over time.
While not going into detail about each update, the developers confirmed they have outlined long-term changes, alongside emergency patches to improve CPU performance and several other essential features.
Despite not seeing an explosive surge in concurrent players upon its Steam debut, Marathon has maintained an impressive record with an average of 380,000 daily active users on the platform. Therefore, Bungie's commitment to improving the game is certainly good news and a great morale boost for the hundreds of thousands of gamers who have remained loyal to the game.
