Following March 8th, Sony Announces List of the 25 Greatest Female Heroes in the PlayStation Gaming World.

To celebrate International Women's Day this past weekend, Sony recently announced a list of the 25 greatest female heroes to ever appear in PlayStation games, featuring many familiar names.

Sony Honors Iconic Female Heroes of PlayStation

Sony boasts a rich history with titles and franchises spanning 32 years in the video game industry. From adventurer Nathan Drake to "War God" Kratos, PlayStation is home to some of the most beloved protagonists of all time. Among them are the captivating female characters – those capable of navigating deadly tombs, surviving in a post-apocalyptic society, and battling hordes of mechanical monsters threatening the world.

One of the first female heroes to capture the public's heart was the iconic Lara Croft from the famous Tomb Raider game series . Her quick wit, superior fighting skills, and ability to survive ancient traps solidified her position as one of the most iconic game characters of the 1990s. This success paved the way for Sony to create more female protagonists over the years, with blockbusters like the Horizon series and The Last of Us Part 2 .

Recently, Sony listed the notable names featured on its platform in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th.

This list is diverse, encompassing iconic characters spanning decades, alongside new additions such as the warmly received protagonist of [the game]. Each group embodies different aspects of a hero, with many of PlayStation's female heroes inspiring the public in various ways over the years.

Conflicting opinions from the community

While this is an impressive list, some fans argue that the "On PlayStation" title is a way for Sony to "circumvent the rules" to include female characters from cross-platform games. This raises bigger questions about what makes a great female protagonist, and leads to debates about the choices. In particular, many are disappointed that the list doesn't include one of the characters arguably more influential than  Jill Valentine .

As more games are released, whether on PlayStation or not, there will undoubtedly be plenty more compelling female leads leading the way.
