Sony confirms AI Frame Generation will come to PlayStation, but not this year.
Sony has confirmed it will bring AI frame generation to PlayStation in the future, but it won't be rolling it out this year.
Sony is developing AI-based frame generation.
Sony has confirmed it is developing AI frame generation technology for future PlayStation platforms.
According to Mark Cerny , this feature will not be released this year, and the specific rollout date has not yet been announced.
Sony unveils AI frame generation technology for future PlayStation consoles.
This technology is part of a collaborative project with AMD.
The new frame generation is part of Project Amethyst , a collaborative project between Sony and AMD .
This technology is related to PlayStation's PSSR and AMD's FSR frame generation.
However, Sony has confirmed that ML upscaling will not be integrated into current solutions anytime soon.
How does AI frame generation work?
Unlike traditional frame interpolation, AI frame generation:
- Motion analysis and pixel data
- Create additional 'simulated' frames between the real frames.
- It is possible to increase FPS by double or more.
This helps improve smoothness, especially in games with heavy graphics.
Not a complete 'FPS saver' solution.
Despite its clear benefits, this technology still has limitations:
- A sufficiently high base FPS is required for efficient operation.
- Hardware performance cannot be completely replaced.
- Delays or artifacts may occur in some cases.
This technology may be available on future Playstation systems.
The future of PlayStation: PS5 or PS6?
Sony has not confirmed whether this technology will appear on the PS5 or become exclusive to future generations of consoles.
With NVIDIA (DLSS) and AMD continuously upgrading PC frame generation, Sony's deeper involvement in AI rendering is a necessary step to compete in the future of gaming.
