Metro 2039 will be 'much darker' than its predecessors.
In Metro 2039, players take on the role of Stranger, tasked with venturing deep into the Moscow subway system.
We've been waiting a long time for a new Metro game, with Exodus released in 2019, seven years ago. Therefore, Metro 2039 carries a huge responsibility. Set in post-apocalyptic Russia, the main storyline revolves around themes of death, tyranny, and political manipulation, all intertwined against the backdrop of the ruined Saint Basil's Cathedral.
Playing as Stranger, you're tasked with venturing into the depths of the Moscow subway system, a place he wants to forget. However, turmoil lurks within the tunnels: Russian factions have united under the banner of Novoreich, led by the new Führer, the legendary Spartan warrior Hunter. His regime is autocratic, and its propaganda machine is working at full capacity – your mission is to put an end to it.
For the first time in the series' history, the player character is fully voiced, and in a first-person shooter like Metro 2039, where atmosphere is key, this will make everything feel more authentic. Many gamers are excited to see how the Stranger character will be developed; the dreams in the trailer were particularly impressive.
As for the action, we get a glimpse of what will happen at the end of the trailer. Underground, The Stranger angers an extremely terrifying creature and must flee deeper into the subway to escape it. Fans expect intense close-quarters gunfights combined with survival horror elements, as well as the return of some familiar weapons and the trusty wristwatch.
Developed in Ukraine despite interruptions caused by war, Metro 2039 delivers an authentically Ukrainian experience. The game retains the core elements of both the series and Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels, but is described as the most 'shocking' installment to date.
Although there is no official release date for Metro 2039, the game is expected to launch in the winter of 2026. It's predicted to launch in the fourth quarter, perhaps between October and December. It's noteworthy that GTA 6's release date is still set for November, so, despite the clear differences in genre and gameplay, it's predicted that 4A Games will try to avoid November.
