Experience STALKER 2 on PS5: The terrifying atmosphere of the Forbidden Zone challenges the bravery of gamers.

If, like me, you're haunted by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, then the STALKER series is probably familiar to you, as it has long attracted a huge fan base of first-person shooter games. images 1 of Experience STALKER 2 on PS5: The terrifying atmosphere of the Forbidden Zone challenges the bravery of gamers.

In my personal opinion, the game's immense appeal lies in its unique blend of a post-apocalyptic world setting, a suffocating atmosphere, terrifying situations as players confront mutants, and a tense survival experience where death is always lurking.

This latest installment threw me straight into 'Zone', a desolate and cursed forbidden land where law and common sense have long since vanished. It's not just a battlefield, but a deadly territory of ruthless bandits, terrifying mutants, and reckless individuals who call themselves 'Stalkers'.

As Skif – the main character I control – I am also one of them. Every step into Zone is a trade-off, as we must accept all the lurking dangers to complete the assigned missions. At its core, this game is defined as a brutal survival shooter. However, if you ask me, the horror element is truly the soul of this experience. Believe me, the feeling of extreme fear and tension is constant, haunting and suffocating me throughout the journey.

Although this game possesses countless other appealing aspects, honestly, it was the profound horror element that captivated and motivated me the most throughout the experience. The terror I felt in the game didn't stop at cheap thrills or a few gruesome mutants. Instead, the development team skillfully wove a multi-layered tapestry of fear, including invisible ghosts, inexplicable anomalies, hauntingly moving objects, and above all, a gradual psychological breakdown that gnaws at the character.

All of this immediately brings to mind a vast Cthulhu horror universe, where madness and supernatural entities intertwine. Fortunately, I'm equipped with specialized gear to hunt down and detect anomalies. And sometimes, to survive, I'm forced to exploit those bizarre events, those paranormal moments, as a risky survival strategy.

This is my first time experiencing this series. With the PC version already having a detailed review, the editor asked me to focus on the genuine feelings of a 'newbie,' especially the experience on the PS5.

I arrived at the event with indescribable excitement, but the information shared afterward dampened my spirits. Knowing that the developer was GSC Game World, a game studio from Ukraine, everything became clear. They not only struggled with persistent cyberattacks but were also directly affected by the military conflict in their homeland. Witnessing this game, after numerous delays, finally being officially scheduled for release on November 21, 2024, on PC and Xbox platforms, truly instilled a deep respect in me. This isn't just about game development; it's a journey of overcoming adversity.

The version I'm experiencing on PS5 is scheduled for official release on November 20, 2025. Even as a complete newcomer, having never encountered this game before, I can't help but feel a great deal of curiosity about the title the developers have given it: 'extreme survival experience'.

As someone already very familiar with the controls of shooting games and using controllers, I entered the game with a bit of confidence, even overconfidence, thinking that I would easily master the pace and challenges the game presented.

But I was completely wrong. The game wasn't easy at all.

I was resurrected and died in a nightmare at the hands of hideous mutants, and I must confess, the development team's ruthlessness was completely merciless. That experience dealt a severe blow to my confidence. This is a truthful account of the hours I realized I had greatly underestimated STALKER2, shattering the pride of a game developer like myself.

Honestly, one of the brightest highlights of my PlayStation 5 experience was the astonishing accuracy of the gyroscope motion sensor integrated into the DualSense controller. I was skeptical, but now I have to say that this technology is truly remarkable.

It allows me to control the aiming reticle in the game with a single physical movement of the controller, instead of just using the traditional analog stick. The barrel movement is incredibly smooth, as if I only need to flick my wrist to fire. This is a huge step forward, providing an extremely intuitive and realistic control feel.

In my personal experience with traditional console shooters, I've always noticed an inherent drawback in how we interact with the controller. Using the thumb to control the analog stick often makes small, precise adjustments extremely difficult, especially when locking onto a target from a distance. Although developers always integrate aim assist features to compensate, in reality, this mechanism doesn't always work effectively as intended; in many situations, it even inadvertently interferes with and reduces the accuracy of the decisive shot.

I have to admit, the gyroscope sensor is the game-changer here. Personally, I found myself adapting to it very quickly, and most importantly, it's not stressful to use.

The ability to support balance along both the horizontal and vertical axes is a major plus. While players may need some time to get used to it initially, I believe its potential for precise handling is in no way inferior to using a mouse.

The only challenge, perhaps, is that the image of a player constantly waving their controller might seem a little… strange. However, overcoming this psychological barrier and mastering that feeling will be key to me – and certainly you – achieving decisive victory on the virtual battlefield.images 10 of Experience STALKER 2 on PS5: The terrifying atmosphere of the Forbidden Zone challenges the bravery of gamers.

I have to admit, when I first started playing, this was a game that immediately cost me dearly. If you're a player accustomed to charging in, confident in accurate headshots, or simply relying on the power of your equipment, I guarantee you'll fall in bitter defeat after just a few steps. In fact, the game's difficulty isn't just challenging; it's designed to be incredibly harsh and brutal. It completely defies conventional combat rules, forcing me to change my entire approach, turning each battle into a grueling survival puzzle.

During the gameplay, there were moments when I felt the opponent's AI system was almost illogical in terms of accuracy. Even though I tried to utilize the terrain for cover, the enemy's aiming seemed perfect, regardless of actual line of sight.

Specifically, on some maps, dense patches of grass completely obscured my view, making target detection an impossible task. Yet, astonishingly, the AI opponents were still able to penetrate this natural camouflage and 'lock onto' me with absolute precision.

But that's not all; the sheer variety of monsters is also a highlight (or a nightmare). I faced mutated dogs charging at terrifying speeds, forcing me to react incredibly quickly. And of course, we can't forget the giant monsters capable of delivering powerful and forceful blows, ready to send the player flying out of the battlefield.

In Zone, resource management isn't just a tactic, it's a matter of survival. Unfortunately, I have to admit that supplies are always at a critical level. With the limited ammunition, healing items, and supplies we carry, every move is a gamble.

I couldn't expect easy looting along the way; even looting on the spot was incredibly risky and difficult. This forced me to complete missions with extremely limited equipment, while the enemy's appearance was surprisingly frequent. Every few meters, an armed confrontation would erupt, forcing me to constantly fire and quickly inject myself with medical supplies. This tension felt almost endless.

This survival challenge forced me to completely change my mindset in combat. It was no longer the familiar display of individual skill from modern shooting games. Now, every action had to be carefully considered: from hiding behind obstacles, only quickly leaning out of cover to fire, to stealthy, cautious movements.

However, even with the most cautious tactics employed, death always looms large. Admittedly, for a player accustomed to virtual battlefields where they can single-handedly take on entire enemy teams, re-acquainting with the constant threat of death is a time-consuming and frustrating process. Clearly, this game is bluntly forcing players to accept a harsh reality: tactical thinking and caution in every combat action are not just an option, but a prerequisite for survival.

But there's another factor that dramatically increases the difficulty: the horror is genuinely terrifying. images 11 of Experience STALKER 2 on PS5: The terrifying atmosphere of the Forbidden Zone challenges the bravery of gamers.

From the start, I was reassured that this wasn't a purely horror game in the literal sense. In my mind, I envisioned a familiar scenario: confrontations with hordes of mutated monsters, typically aggressive zombie dogs or slow-moving, gorilla-like four-legged creatures. Indeed, their appearance was quite troublesome, especially when they constantly attacked in packs and, notably, dropped absolutely no items. Even so, these challenges were entirely within my expectations and preparation.

However, what truly terrified me were the mind-bending tricks this game employed. It wasn't just visuals; it was a total torture of the senses. I vividly remember the haunting whispers of a little girl echoing in my ears, or the heavy, mysterious footsteps that felt like they were always lurking behind me.

The enemy attacked not only with physical force; they plunged straight into my consciousness, causing visual disturbances and extreme disorientation. Amidst the extreme tension, swirling plasma energy spheres, bizarre vortices, and a series of supernatural phenomena erupted continuously. In that moment, my familiar shotgun, my last hope, suddenly became terrifyingly useless and fragile.

Admittedly, the enemies in the game are a formidable challenge. Although they can be hit by bullets, they possess a toughness and strength that made me struggle. Every step in this game feels like sinking deeper into a Cthulhu horror genre full of grotesque and haunting elements.

But what terrified me the most was the auditory hallucination system the developers had incorporated. Footsteps and meaningless whispers constantly disrupted my concentration. In a game environment where even harmless natural sounds can startle me, it created a constant state of tension.

This is especially dangerous for a shooter game like this. Sound is a vital source of information for locating and tracking enemy movements. The system's constant output of misleading and disruptive signals turns every encounter into a true psychological torture.images 12 of Experience STALKER 2 on PS5: The terrifying atmosphere of the Forbidden Zone challenges the bravery of gamers.

The combination of extreme fear and gyroscope control is the worst – and also the most admirable – element this game offers.

When a sudden jumpscare occurred, the controller in my hand vibrated violently, accurately reflecting my own shock. Significantly, the high sensitivity of the gyroscope sensor immediately translated that unconscious tremor into the crosshairs on the screen. The result was a disastrous sequence of actions: I missed the target, the enemy closed in, panic intensified, my hand trembled even more, and of course, I missed again.

In that moment, I transformed into a classic horror character—trapped in a loop of fear and helplessness. While I'm trying to recount this in an objective tone, the panic the game conveyed was completely real and left me speechless. It wasn't just simulated fear, but a genuine 'survival' experience perfectly emulated through the control technology.
