The iPhone 18 Pro may feature a variable aperture camera, marking the beginning of Apple's long-term upgrade strategy.
This is seen as a strategic move for Apple to compete more directly with rivals in the mobile photography sector, where companies like Samsung have been relentlessly pushing the megapixel race for many years.
Apple is reportedly preparing a long-term camera upgrade roadmap for future generations of iPhones, with the starting point possibly appearing on the iPhone 18 Pro series launching this fall. According to leaks from China, this will be the first generation of iPhones to feature a variable aperture lens – a significant step forward in Apple's mobile photography upgrade strategy.
This information comes from Digital Chat Station, a well-known leak account on the Weibo platform, stating that both the Pro and Pro Max versions will feature new technology in their main cameras. If accurate, this would be the first time Apple has abandoned the fixed f/1.78 aperture that has been maintained since the iPhone 14 Pro.
Technically, aperture controls the amount of light entering the sensor, directly affecting brightness and depth of field. A large aperture (small f-number) lets in more light and creates a sharp bokeh effect, while a small aperture (large f-number) is suitable for scenes requiring high detail across the entire frame. Bringing variable aperture to smartphones will allow users more flexibility in various shooting conditions, especially when dealing with complex lighting situations.
In fact, this isn't entirely new technology in the mobile world. Samsung previously experimented with variable aperture on the Galaxy S9 and S10 series, but later abandoned it due to design limitations and practical effectiveness. However, with Apple's involvement, it's likely they will better optimize both hardware and software to maximize the benefits of this technology.
Furthermore, the source revealed that Apple is developing a larger main camera sensor, approximately 1/1.12 inch in size – significantly larger than the current one. A larger sensor means better light gathering capabilities, improved image quality in low-light conditions, and increased overall detail. In addition, other upgrades such as improved optical image stabilization (OIS) for the ultra-wide-angle camera and a periscope telephoto lens are also in the planning.
Most notably, there are rumors about a 200MP camera – a specification already common on high-end Android flagships. This is seen as a strategic move for Apple to compete more directly with rivals in the mobile photography market, where companies like Samsung have been relentlessly pushing the megapixel race for many years.
However, not all upgrades will appear immediately on the iPhone 18 Pro. According to the revealed roadmap, Apple may roll out these improvements in stages, spanning multiple product generations to ensure stability and optimize the user experience.
If the leaks are accurate, Apple is demonstrating a major ambition to redefine the smartphone camera experience. Variable aperture, larger sensors, and higher resolution could be key factors in helping the iPhone maintain its position in the premium segment, especially in the context of increasingly fierce competition in mobile photography.
